Management course choices – marketing or finance

One of the most popular options for students when they are considering a post-graduate course is an MBA. In the minds of the student community, this degree is associated with a high flying corporate career with attractive salary packages and managerial positions. But universities offer MBA degrees with many different specialisations. This puts the students in a quandary. Which specialisation should they opt for?

The two most popular options for students are MBA in marketing and MBA in finance. Some students are naturally inclined towards either one or the other. Some students believe that they have a way with numbers. They opt for the MBA in finance to build a career in financial analysis, investment planning, taxation and securities. They have a vision of the future where they are advising wealthy clients on what stocks they can invest in or managing the budget of a multi-national corporation. But there are also several other courses that lead to the same goal. Chartered accountants, chartered financial analysts, cost accountants and company secretaries are also aiming for the same roles. In times of an economic boom, there is enough space in the market for all these professionals. But during times of an economic downturn, it is observed that there are too many people fighting over a limited number of jobs.

Some students are naturally extroverted. They love talking and spending time with people and believe that they have the ability to influence others. So they opt for the marketing course. Marketing jobs are always available since they are the most important roles in a company. Unless someone brings in the business, the other roles in the company become redundant. Students who have a knack for numbers as well as being good communicators can look at the prospects in the job market before making their decision.
